Garden 2 Table’s program is designed to increase the awareness of ‘the origin of food’ and the ‘importance of healthy food choices’ to school age children in the greater Guelph community. Through providing an enjoyable educational experience about food preparation, agriculture and their natural environment, the hope is to positively influence the children’s food choices.
Garden 2 Table also provides a mentoring and leadership opportunity for University of Guelph School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) students as they
get to mentor local elementary school children. Volunteer HTM students can participate through each phase of the program, acting as role models for the young children while learning more about the importance of sustainability and volunteerism. This ‘experiential learning’ program is meant to build bridges into our greater community through the use of the many ‘food’ related resources the university possesses.
The program is a collaborative effort
between the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM), the Guelph Centre for Urban Organic Farming (GCUOF) and Jean Little and St. Michaels elementary schools. The kids will partake in the program that will see them grow, harvest, prepare and share food from the GCUOF’s organic garden located in the university’s arboretum.
